Holy Grail hair product . . . Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Whilst I was in Jamaica I visited a huge store in Montego Bay (North Coast) called Fontana Pharmacy. I kid you not it is the biggest pharmacy I have ever seen, even bigger than some of the deluxe Boots stores here in the UK.
For the past few years I have been trying to get my hands on a product that has had rave reviews here in the UK and US amongst many with Afro Caribbean hair. Whilst browsing the beauty product aisles in this pharmacy, I spotted this product, there was only 1 left but I immediately snapped it up; Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO). You're probably thinking ''What's so special about it?'', stay with me as I explain further.

Ever since I was a child I always heard my parents mention how great castor oil is for various things (dry scalp, moisturising skin and etc) but I thought nothing of it. But when I started my hair journey back in 2009 castor oil especially the JBCO was fast becoming popular with many for its hair growth properties.

''Jamaican Black Castor Oil is simply a raw, unrefined form of castor oil. So it is a form of castor oil that has retained most, if not all of its nutritive properties. It is simply a high quality form of castor oil. And this is why JBCO is so highly sought after and wildly popular among women''.
(Curlynikki, 2011)

JBCO can be used for:

Hair growth
Hair and scalp conditioner
Massage oil for aches and pains
First aid for cuts, burns and wounds
Skin softener
Acne treatment

Before I started my hair journey, my hair was by my ears; no matter what I did, it did not grow longer than that. Since changing my regimen, adding/deducting products/routines and etc, my hair has grown significantly to the point where I am almost BSL (bra strap length), but for some reason my hair has decided not to grow any further. Not only that when I was poorly in the latter part of 2010, my hair started to get really dry, break, look limp and just not in a great condition, and ever since then I have been trying to get it back to its healthy state. Parts of my hair I noticed have begun to get thin, and I am determined to try and nip those in the bud before it gets out of control.

Unable to find the JBCO in the UK, I resorted to using castor oil from different brands, and to be honest, it did absolutely nothing for me apart from make my hair smell really bad! But that aside, I have heard nothing but positive reviews from using this particular castor oil, which I am really excited to try. I opted for the JBCO mixed with lavender because it will at least kill the rancid smell that castor oil can leave on the scalp/hair after using for a few days.

I am going to trial this product for a good few months to see if it really does grow my hair, and I will feed back to you all later in the year.

Have you heard of/tried JBCO? If so, have you had great results?

  2. I've seen JBCO in a few afro-caribbean hair shops (in the UK) now, I think pak cosmetics sell it as well.
It's meant to thicken up your hair as well, but I have never been consistent with it to see good results lol, good luck :).

Yes, I was searching last night and I saw it on Paks (typical lol). But yes the thickness and length is what I hope I benefit from :) Thanks :)

  4. TBH i hear great things about this, but I have pure castor oil for Holland and Berrets I think. So I wanted to know if that has the same results as JBCO. Looking forward to the review.

I've got an ordinary clear castor oil from the pharmacy, and I didn't really see much difference. I, like you am excited to see what happens with JBCO :) Will review soon.
